Description

Eduardo Varandas Araruna, Federal Prosecutor with the Brazilian Prosecution Office for Labour Issues (MPT), provides a first-hand account of the first successful use of civil class actions in Brazil in relation to the prosecution and prevention of child sexual exploitation for commercial purposes. Modelled on success stories emerging out of Brazil, this seminar will discuss the possible implementation of civil class actions internationally as an effective method of tackling child sexual exploitation. In Brazil these civil class actions have provided compensation for child protection services closing the circle between prosecution and protection.

The panel will feature Eduardo Varandas (Brazilian Federal Prosecutor), Bharti Patel (CEO of ECPAT UK) and Kathryn Llewellyn (CEO of United Purpose). The event will be chaired by David Bull, former CEO of UNICEF UK.

The seminar is organised by United Purpose, in partnership with ECPAT UK, MPT, and King’s College London.
